Impact of variants on COVID-19 tests

 

This dashboard provides information on what we know about the impact of the new Omicron variant on commercialized COVID-19 tests listed in our Test Directory.

FIND is actively and independently monitoring and verifying key information about the impact of the Omicron variant on diagnostic test performance.

For the majority of the COVID-19 molecular tests (PCR), the overall sensitivity of detection is not expected to be impacted when the infection is due to Omicron, as these tests have multiple gene targets. So if one gene target is not detected due to mutations or deletions, the other targets are still recognized. The Omicron variant notably contains deletions in its S gene, one of the common targets of many PCR tests, resulting in “S gene drop out” or “S gene target failure”. A small number of molecular tests demonstrate S gene dropout and can therefore be used as a marker for Omicron. However, S gene drop out only provides an indication of Omicron infection; confirmation requires sequencing.

For rapid antigen tests (Ag RDTs), the potential impact on performance is less clear.

These dashboards are continually updated with the latest data available to us. The data come from direct communications and published reports by manufacturers. We are working to independently verify the performance of priority Ag RDTs and PCR (including those that are listed for emergency use by WHO), and will add the relevant data when available.
