Enhanced diagnostics are needed for growing global threat
As part of a broad programmatic effort to ensure the availability of diagnostics for outbreak response, FIND has issued a new Request for Proposals (RFP). The RFP seeks proposals for partnerships to expand a comprehensive, near patient testing (NPT) platform that can accommodate an array of assays to address multiple pathogens. The RFP targets NPT platform providers with nucleic acid testing technologies that have worked in epidemic-prone countries and are capable of developing new assays for the diagnosis of a range of outbreak-prone diseases.
Epidemics of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are a significant and growing global threat. However, most of the currently available detection and surveillance systems are designed for recognition of limited numbers of known pathogens and are unable to respond to these outbreaks in a timely manner.
Rapid, accurate and actionable diagnostics are fundamental to successful outbreak preparedness and response, and address multiple facets of public health intervention, such as early detection through surveillance, saving lives through timely patient management, and facilitate therapeutic and vaccine development. The work the RFP supports will ideally bring forth a product that can facilitate these myriad aspects of successful outbreak preparedness and response.
Submissions are due by 16 March 2018. Following review of submissions, FIND will offer two awards to support menu expansion and assist in establishing a semi-open business model to allow for further assay development in the future.
