Expanded production capacity in local and regional hubs is critical to ensuring that healthcare providers in low- and middle-income countries can implement effective testing strategies to contain the spread of the virus. In an outbreak situation, RDTs need to be produced and distributed quickly in huge volumes, which requires manufacturing capacity to be in place before the outbreak begins. Unfortunately, prior to COVID-19, this was not the case, thus manufacturers found themselves rushing to fill a capacity gap.
