CDC awards a five-year cooperative agreement to FIND to build global capacity for diagnostic testing of tuberculosis, malaria and HIV

Geneva, Switzerland – 1 November 2010 – On 2 September 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded FIND a five year cooperative agreement to build global capacity for diagnostic testing of tuberculosis, malaria and HIV through laboratory strengthening and integration of services under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR II).

The notice of award comes a year after the “Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008” (PEPFAR II) was signed into law. This Act authorizes up to US $48 billion over the next five years to combat global HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. To meet these goals and build sustainable local capacity, PEPFAR II will support health care workers in resource-limited countries around the world.

FIND, together with its partner Global Implementation Solutions, will put into service activities that will strengthen the quality of laboratory services, introduce new and more rapid diagnostic tools, increase human resource capacity and support the integration of laboratory services for diagnostic testing of tuberculosis, malaria and HIV. FIND’s project approach involves leadership in discussions of laboratory service integration, developing national standardized monitoring and evaluation plans, reviewing past policies and strategic plans to identify needs and gaps, and creating timelines that pave the way forward.

”FIND is greatly honored to have been recognized as a Cooperation Agreement partner with CDC and is fully committed to their mission of combating infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, by strengthening health systems and building sustainable, integrated and evidence-based programs in numerous countries worldwide,” said Giorgio Roscigno, CEO of FIND. “We will do our dedicated best to facilitate and implement the goals of this invaluable partnership.”

The project period of this cooperative agreement will run from September 30, 2010 through September 29, 2015, during which FIND, in Year One, will focus its laboratory strengthening activities in Botswana, Dominican Republic, Southern Sudan and Vietnam.
