From diagnosis to treatment in oncology: challenges and ethical questions

22 May 2023, 11h00-12h30 CEST, Geneva Switzerland

The 76th World Health Assembly is going to discuss a resolution on strengthening diagnostics. Both medical imaging as well as laboratory and point of care diagnostics are crucial for medical decisions. In many lower- and middle-income-countries many people do not have access to diagnostics and even less to adequate treatment. In particular, the growing number of patients with non-communicable diseases like cancer suffer from little or no treatment availabilities, high costs and a lack of qualified medical staff. Angela Muriuki, Director Women’s Health programme at FIND will be a panelist.

Prioritizing diagnostics on the global agenda

24 May 2023, 17h30-19h30 CEST, Geneva Switzerland

Policymakers, industry professionals, and practitioners convening at this year’s World Health Assembly will be keenly focused on strengthening pandemic preparedness and health systems resilience globally. Access to timely and accurate diagnosis will be vital to achieving these goals and global health security going forward. Expanding access to diagnostics across developing countries, in particular, could help avoid 1.1 million deaths annually from HIV, TB, hepatitis B, syphilis, hypertension, and diabetes. Further, innovations in financing, technology, and workforce development can help close the access gap if prioritized, funded, and scaled.

Dr. Ayoade Alakija, Special Envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-Accelerator), World Health Organization (WHO) and chair of FIND, will be taking part in the panel discussions.
