World Hepatitis Day 2021

World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and hepatocellular cancer. This year’s theme is “Hepatitis Can’t Wait”. With a person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis related illness – even in the current COVID-19 crisis – we can’t wait to act on viral hepatitis. There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D, and E. Hepatitis B and C are the most common, and together result in 1.1 million deaths and 3 million new infections per year.

• 24 July – Sonjelle Shilton, Hepatitis Lead, FIND, will speak on HEAD-Start – Simplifying hep C linkage-to-care & cascade retention during the webinar organized by the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL). Registration
• 27 July – Webinar organized by FIND and Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) with support from World Health Organization (WHO), Ministry of Health, Malaysia (MoH), and Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) at 9:00 CEST/15:00 MYT: “Hepatitis C can’t wait, Malaysia isn’t waiting”. • 29 July – Georgia in-country event led by National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Georgia (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and FIND on strategies to enable last mile testing for hepatitis C elimination
• 4 August – Dr Elena Ivanova, Technology Innovation Lead, FIND, will speak on Multicentre evaluation of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) and Plasma Separation Card (PSC) samples for the quantitative detection of HCV RNA during 4^th webinar organized by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination and the Task Force for Global Health.
